What does that look like for Jesus Culture San Diego?
On Sunday, September 6th our community is celebrating what we have called
“Sabbath Sunday”, for the 5th year in a row. We will not have in person gatherings for this Sunday, but we will have a special online service. Although this may seem like an odd decision for a Church, we believe that rest is spiritual. During His time on earth, Jesus reminded us of the gift of Sabbath. “Sabbath was made to meet the needs of people”, He said in Mark’s gospel. We believe that God intended us to practice Sabbath and that as we embrace rest we are embracing one of the most life-giving practices of Jesus.
We invite you into discovering this deeper rhythm of rest with us on Sunday, September 6th. We’ll stream a service here on this website [Link] where we’ll take a moment as a House to look more into this practice of Sabbath rest, celebrate God’s goodness and introduce, teach and begin to practice a spiritual discipline that will refresh and re-energize us. It’s our prayer that you will incorporate rhythms of rest into your life.
Sabbath literally means stopping. The Sabbath is an entire day set aside to stop - stop working, stop wanting, stop worrying, etc. and to simply rest in God’s presence.
If God did it, so should we.

Jesus Culture San Diego Family,
This August officially marks the 5th anniversary of Jesus Culture San Diego. What an adventure it has been! Leading this Jesus Culture San Diego community has been one of the greatest honors that Melissa and I have had. We are filled with gratitude to be on this journey with you. Since we started JCSD we have intentionally included a yearly rhythm as a church we call Sabbath Sunday.
On Sunday, September 6, we'll once again practice one of our favorite traditions as a church: Sabbath Sunday.
For the fifth year in a row, we will not gather in person. Instead, we'll invite our entire church family into something we believe is deeply biblical, profoundly countercultural, and incredibly life-giving—a day to stop, rest, delight in God, and remember that He is the One who sustains us.
The word Sabbath literally means to stop.
In the opening pages of Scripture, after six days of creating, God rested (Genesis 2:2-3). Not because He was tired, but because He was establishing a rhythm for humanity. Before there was sin, before there was hurry, before there was burnout, there was Sabbath. Rest was woven into creation itself.
Sometimes we think of rest as something we earn after we've worked hard enough. But Scripture presents it differently. Rest is not a reward for finishing everything on our list; it is a gift we receive because our Heavenly Father is faithful.
Jesus reminded us, "Come to Me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest." - Matthew 11:28
Notice He didn't say, "Come to Me when you've finished everything."
He simply said, "Come."
We know that for many of us, slowing down can actually be difficult. Our calendars are full. Our phones never stop buzzing. There is always another project, another responsibility, another email, another practice, another game, another thing demanding our attention.
Sabbath gently reminds us that while there is always more work to do, there is never more of God to earn.
This is a Sunday every year that our JCSD community intentionally stops, remembers, celebrates and steps away from our normal weekend routine and into the rhythm of Sabbath. For us, this is more than time off. This is a time to implement and remember a sacred rhythm that has so often been forgotten in the fast-paced world that we live in. It is our hope that this is something that you and your family will begin to discover and implement into your life as well.
As a community we press into God, serve hard, pray hard and work hard to make the name of Jesus famous. But we also need to rest hard and remember that it’s “Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,’ says the Lord Almighty.” (Zechariah 4:6). Resting is a sign of trust and faith. For all our Hosts who faithfully serve Sunday by Sunday, we are grateful for you! Hopefully, you’ll get some extra time to rest and enjoy family and friends this Sabbath Sunday.
Sabbath isn't about legalism. It isn't about following a checklist or creating another rule to keep. Jesus made that abundantly clear when He said,
"The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath." (Mark 2:27)
Sabbath is God's gracious invitation into life.
- It's choosing trust over striving.
- Presence over pressure.
- Contentment over constant productivity.
- It's making space to enjoy God's presence, His creation, and the people He's placed in our lives.
To every Host who faithfully serves week after week, thank you. We pray this Sabbath Sunday refreshes your soul and reminds you how deeply loved and valued you are. Your faithfulness helps make ministry possible throughout the year, and we hope this day is a genuine gift to you.
We'll also have a special online Sabbath service available that day, and we'd love for you to gather with your family and worship together from wherever you are.
May this Sabbath Sunday be a reminder that Jesus is enough, His grace is sufficient, and His invitation still stands:
"Come to Me... and you will find rest for your souls."
